Patatine Pizza

Today we decided to take a little day trip to visit some of the other islands in the Venetian Lagoon.

Just a short 15 minute boat trip from Venice, Murano was our first stop. This little island is famous for its glasswork! The whole town is essentially shop after shop of beautiful handmade glass jewelry, art, sculptures, and more.

Little glass candies and sushi!

Most of our time here was spent hopping from shop to shop, admiring the beautiful art. I also got an Italian affogato, or a coffee with whipped cream and ice cream, but forgot to take a picture! It was just so good I was absolutely engrossed.

We also went for a glassblowing demonstration in the “Glass Cathedral”. This is an old cathedral which has been refurbished as a bar and glassblowing studio.

The demonstration was very interesting and there was very dramatic music in the background as we sipped an Aperol Spritz and watched a skilled master glass blower as his craft.

It’s quite a mesmerizing and satisfying art to watch, like a well rehearsed dance. I find it crazy how hot the glass is while they work with it and how pliable it is as well!

After a few hours at Murano, we caught the number 12 ferry to Burano. Originally, this tiny island wasn’t on our list of places to see, but I’m so glad we went! Burano is absolutely stunning.

On Burano

Every single house on this island is painted in a gorgeous bright colour. It’s absolutely tiny, we walked from one end to the other in under 10 minutes, but there are some very cute streets to explore. Being much quieter than Venice, Burano was a nice break from the hustle and bustle of large tourist crowds. It’s definitely worth the visit :)

For dinner, we ordered some takeout pizza (takeout to avoid paying the obligatory sitting fee in a restaurant) and walked to a park by the water to eat. I got a rather non-traditional, yet delicious pizza with fries on top!

Patatine  Pizza!

Honestly so delicious, this is an amazing food combination.

Rather than take the ferry from Burano back to Venice, we walked over a bridge to the tiny island of Mazzorbo. There’s not much on this island, but we strolled though a little vineyard (belonging to a Michelin Star restaurant) and a small park before getting to Mazzorbo’s ferry terminal.

A nice peaceful stroll on Mazzorbo

Pastel De Nata

We had an absolutely stunning day today! Although we spent about 3 hours driving from Lagos to Sintra on Portuguese tolled highways, our time in both those cities was incredible. We had a fantastic breakfast spread in our hotel today, and we we spent about 45 minutes tasting Portuguese delicacies, including tomato and pumpkin jams, honey fresh from the comb, and many breads and baked goods. Delicious breakfast We were now fueled to take a walk on the beautiful boardwalk in Lagos. We walked along the Atlantic towards the Ponta da Piedade, a rocky outcrop where a small lighthouse stands. The water was a gorgeous blue, the sandstone cliffs a calm beige, and the weather was on our side gracing us with a nice cool breeze.  Gorgeous cliffside Made it to the end of the boardwalk! This is definitely a place we’ll have to return to…I would love to do a kayak trip along the coastline and explore the beautiful rock formations from below. BC Ferries Yam Fries

Four months, 13 countries, endless love and memories. I cannot believe I’m already writing the last blog of this trip! The time has flown by. This evening we left London for our last flight of the summer, our flight home to Canada. We spent September 2nd similar to how we spent May 2nd - walking around Hampstead Heath and stopping for feast at Ginger and White Café. Goodbye feast at Ginger and White It felt so surreal to be back in London exactly four months after we got here! The seasons had changed, leaves were falling, but the city felt somewhat familiar, comfortable almost.  Fall leaves appearing in Hampstead Heath As we took the tube to the airport I felt nostalgic for our travels already - it’s been such a unique experience.  Waiting for the tube in the new Elizabeth Line station I won’t lie, I teared up a little bit waving goodbye to London from above. Last views of London At least we got some yummy airplane food to soothe our souls… and I’m not even jo...

Fried Chicken

Today we finally got some chilly weather… which I was unprepared for! However, our last day in Stockholm was still wonderful.  We started the cloudy morning with a ferry ride to another one of Stockholms islands. Our destination was the Vasa Museum.  Our ferry boat (which is a part of public transport here!) The Vasa Museum is one of the most popular museums in Scandinavia as it houses a fully preserved shipwreck from 1628. The Vasa was constructed in 1628 and set sail from Stockholm… unfortunately it only reached about 1km offshore before sinking! The imposing hull of the Vasa Reportedly, the Vasa was top-heavy, so when a huge gust of wind tipped her, water poured into her open gun ports, quickly sinking the ship. The Vasa lay on the bottom of the Baltic Sea for 333 years, where the low salinity of the water helped to preserve her.  Model of the divisions in the hull of the Vasa  Perfectly preserved wooden carvings on the ship Model of the Vasa setting sail T...
