Today we finally got some chilly weather… which I was unprepared for! However, our last day in Stockholm was still wonderful.
We started the cloudy morning with a ferry ride to another one of Stockholms islands. Our destination was the Vasa Museum.

The Vasa Museum is one of the most popular museums in Scandinavia as it houses a fully preserved shipwreck from 1628. The Vasa was constructed in 1628 and set sail from Stockholm… unfortunately it only reached about 1km offshore before sinking!

Reportedly, the Vasa was top-heavy, so when a huge gust of wind tipped her, water poured into her open gun ports, quickly sinking the ship. The Vasa lay on the bottom of the Baltic Sea for 333 years, where the low salinity of the water helped to preserve her.

Today, 90% of the ship on display is the original ship that sank all those centuries ago. It was so imposing to look at this huge ship, which weights about as much as 6 jumbo jets! It felt like we were taking a step back into the past.

After a few hours in the Vasa Museum, we decided to find lunch. Somehow, we ended up at a fried chicken place… but I’m not complaining! It was nice to eat some comfort food on this cold day.

After our late lunch, we walked to a region of the city called Södermalm. Notably, this region is incredibly hilly, with bridges connecting buildings to streets of different levels… it was very interesting and beautiful to walk through.

Lastly, we walked up to the Mariaberget observation deck. Leading to this deck is a wooden walkway offering stunning views of the Stockholm skyline. It was the perfect way to say goodbye to the city.
