Norwegian waffles

We started our last day in Oslo the way we most enjoy spending time -  in a beautiful park!

The Ekebergparken Sculpture Park is a huge green space in the southeast of Oslo. It’s known for it’s many unique sculptures which are scattered throughout the park.

One of my favourite sculpture installations were the Fairy Lights. These were colourful lights hanging in the woods with soothing music and nature sounds playing in the background… the whole experience felt so ethereal and relaxing.

This park is also where Munch was inspired to paint The Scream, and so a metal rectangle frames the paintings outline against the Oslo background.

Up on the park hill, high above the city, we could enjoy the beautiful Oslo views. We even saw something familiar… the Holmenkollen Ski Jump which we had zip lined off of a few days ago!

After the park, we walked into the city centre to get some Norwegian Waffles! These Nordic waffles are soft and thin and come in a variety of flavours.

I had sweet one with jam, sour cream, and brown cheese, while Liam had a  savoury one with sausage, onion, ketchup, and mustard.

Following our waffles, we visited the Akershus Fortress, which has been around since the 1300s. The fortress is a historically key structure in Oslo, built to protect the city. It remained un-captured until the 1940s, when the Nazi occupation of Norway started. Now, since 2002, the fortress has been open to the public as an important cultural monument.

We spent the afternoon wandering through the city streets, admiring architecture, and exploring cute shops (especially the ones with board games, which Liam loves).

Naturally, I got hungry again so we had to stop for a vegan hot dog… which was just the thing I needed.

Our last day was rather laid back, but that’s the beauty of travelling… you get to choose how you want to spend each day.

Now as I sit here and finish my blog, I am having the most amazing time ever. Why? Because Ed Sheeran is playing live in Oslo and I can hear him from the garden.
