Buongiorno a tutti! Today we crossed the border from France into Italy. Our travel was a bit longer than expected as our FlixBus arrived 20 minutes late… and then we were stuck for an hour in traffic… but after 3.5 hours we made it to Genova!
This city is an iconic maritime power rich with history and steeped with opulent buildings and churches. We spent our afternoon here walking through the narrow streets of the old town, discovering beautiful places.

We also saw the house of Christopher Columbus (who was born in Genova).

But I’d be lying if I said that the first we did wasn’t going for some Ligurian focaccia. Our stop was a bakery recommended by our hostel called Antioch Forno Della Casana. I got a focaccia with green pesto, both of which are specialties of Liguria, the region of Italy in which Genova resides. Liam also got a fun combination: focaccia with tomatoes and anchovies.

The bread was so crunchy, so delicious, perfectly steeped with olive oil and salt. The pesto was fresh and home made, some of the best pesto I have ever had.
However, Liam has an eye for good ice cream and we came across a place called Cremeria Buonafede Genova. A little hole-in-the-wall, it’s easy to walk by, but Liam had a good feeling about it. Boy was he right! We both got huge scoops of ice cream for a very reasonable price and they had delicious home-made whipped cream on top!

I’d never had whipped cream on ice cream, but I certainly think I’ll have it again… what a heavenly combination.
After these delicious treats, we walked up a large hill to the Spianata di Castelletto, a large plaza overlooking the whole city. We had great 360 views of the old town, the port, and everything in between.

Happy to be in such a wonderful place! |
Coming back, we got caught in a warm summer thunderstorm! So by the time we got home we were absolutely soaked… but so happy :)
